CRIMINALITY OF GAY MARRIAGE IN NIGERIA

"And the rib which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman and brought her unto the man"

The issue of same sex marriage is a question as old as time. One of the most widely read and acclaimed books in the world today (the Bible) describes the first union which as ordained by God was between a man and a woman, not man and man or woman and woman. The question of right or wrong as regards to gay relationships has its answers in the moral and spiritual beliefs of the individual which varies from place to place, and person to person. What may be considered right in the south may be a taboo in the north and what is acceptable in the west may be considered criminal by the law elsewhere.
In nigeria today the bill crminalising gay unions has been passed and has raised som eyebrows especially in the international community as to an infringement of basic human rights, which begs to ask the question once again of a proper definition of human rights, and if these so called rights are not violated everyday in every country around the world.

SSS PARADES BOKO HARAM SPOKESMAN

"Crime in its own right is as professional as any job can be, and its perpetrators, the artists of the art. The complexity of these simple minds tells the stories that intrigue the average human mind when truth is revealed"

The announcement by the Nigerian SSS of the capture of the said boko haram spokesman Ali Sanda Konduga (AKA) Usman Al-Zwahiri read out as an orchestrated script and nothing but a save face charade. Intelligent enough would have been a more convincing story, instant as Kodak pictures of vivid actions taken immediately. For a start, the naming and arrest of the so called serving house of assembly member and detailed intelligence reports of the boko haram modus operandi. The man paraded, seemed confident of himself, a confidence devoid of the fear of what he has done or is accused of doing, but a shaky confidence of “what have I got myself into” his face seemed to ask the question if the money he will eventually receive for his public appearance was worth the accusations.
Giving the gravity of the numerous attacks on civilian and military personnel, not to mention the countless deaths arising from the tide of violence unleashed by this sect, it’s amazing to see the man accused of being the spokesman of the sect looking so unruffled and without the normal trademarks of someone who has passed through the hands of the SSS .
Enough of the deceit, the SSS should come clean with the simple truth if indeed its complexity is known.

NIGERIA @51 (STILL INCOHERENT)

"The deception of anarchy is similar to the winds that bring rain, which also announce the entrance of a hurricane"

From the horn of Africa runs the blood of the innocent all the way to the cape of good hope, years of war and the carnage of human flesh, raw in the memory of lives that lived through the times.
With independence birth a new dawn.  History’s tales of martyrs, tyrants, leaders, rulers, military unrest, civil and domestic conflict occupied its place on the sands of time, leaving little of no space for talk of the upright and incorruptible without opening pages of one holy book or another.
The flourishing business of governance passed from generation to generation paints a picture of modern day Nigerian democracy, a political disease inherited from the military which until recently has never clearly been civilian
At 51, heading up the hill of success pedaled on one foot is a worse shoe than sitting behind a first timer on a bicycle, as the latter is already a known recipe for a an expected crash, unlike the expert who tries to show off and sells more than bargained for.
It’s been one more year of an extension of the troubles of Africa’s back stage giant, from knife fights to suicide bombs, from agitations to full blown militancy, from analog corruption to digital corruption, the list of her woes endless.
Ailing and failing Nigeria still manages to maintain international diplomatic relations with the calmness of a con artist. Despite our over burdened hearts and daily fears.
Thank you Baba God for yet another year, let your will be done.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY NIGERIA.

AKHWAT AKWOP STATEMENT

Hot on the heels of the 14 day ultimatum given Boko Haram by  the Ijaw Militant Youth, another group the Akhwat Akwop Militia has issued a statement fresh from the bakery of "enough is enough". Gradually rolling down this road to anarchy, its said of the wise "a stitch in time save nine".
There'll be lots more to come if our Dear President continues to pedal these threats with one foot, he can confirm from Mubarak, or Gaddafi, none of them had it easy.

End the madness you have started or we will be forced to permanently end it for you. A word is enough for the wise.

11. Akhwat Akwop states here that should President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan not want to continue as President in 2015, the presidency must and should remain in the Old Eastern Region of Nigeria.

12. Akhwat Akwop calls on all Christians to continue to pray for God’s guidance and protection for Christians in the north, Nigeria and the world at large.

THE ABSU RAPE CASE/TAPE

"truth is more often lost in the mist of conflicting truths"

Rape is an age old system of mental and physiological torture used as a most inhumane method to physically abuse another human being, which of cos translates and is understood as a crime and punishable under law.

The unsatisfactory method of investigation of the police once again came into the lime lite with the case of a gang rape sex tape circulating the internet, which originated from the ABSU (Abia State University) and claimed by many as to show students of the Abia State University raping an alleged undergraduate female student. This inhumane treatment mete out to this helpless female was brought to the front burner, as unfortunately for the rapists they thought it was a good idea to record the whole event.

The truth of this matter will only be told through the lips of this young lady who remains anonymous as of the moment. Giving the circumstances and exposure of the case one would expect the girl in question to have surfaced and clear the air around the events that happened on that very faithful day.
Thanks to the private sleuthing of well meaning Nigerians who unearthed names from social networking sites of names being mentioned in by the 10 minute video clip while the girl was being raped. Kudos to others who through personal means made sure appropriate authorities show interest in the case.

To speak of the shameful way the Abia State Government wanted to wave aside this terrible injustice aside is bad enough a mention, as the statements issued denying and even threatening to sue news corporations and newspapers who continued to publish articles about the case, remain baffling as to how the Abia State Goverment came to such conclusion with out proper investigation.
Reports as of today the 25th September 2011 as released by the police officially state that three persons have been picked up for questioning in connection with the gang rape case as efforts to track the other two and the whereabouts of the girl are underway.

The enthusiasm of initial interests appropriated the case has already begun to dwindle as more conflicting stories surface, but irrespective of what the truth might be trimmed to eventually, this surely has been an eye opener to some, to others, a discovery of ways not to do things and to the general public, the need for applicable laws to curb and protect victims of rape.

A WIKILEAKS APPROACH

"Ambitious as a lie might try to be, its never half as sweet as a bitter truth"

The exposé of Government secrets to the general public by popular demand has increased curiosity about the  credibility of wikileaks as an appropriate or trustworthy source of information. Over time, wikileaks has been able to prove without a doubt, the fraudulent dealings and sometimes sinister motives of interactions between high placed representatives of countries and even dealings within the Government of any country with adequate, juicy and in the nick of time information which suits just perfectly.

Its indeed a nice picture being painted by wikileaks, as its ability to share and disclose private conversations, Government cables via embassies, e-mails of highly placed officials and war documents to mention a few. As far as the public is concerned the whistle-blower information made available by wikileaks is usually taken with a pinch of salt, as where to draw the line between truth, absolute truth and collaboration of facts to suit a purpose. Its an issue of separating the wheat from the chaff, though claims by wikileaks insist the information has been refined for public consumption.

As wikileaks continue to release diplomatic cables containing information gathered through intelligence reports, documents and word of mouth concerning Nigeria and its Goverment Officials, it leaves little to the imagination of what already is known in some circles. Though denial trail most of the reports, its also a known fact that to trace the source of a fire, one can easily follow the smoke.

AN ARM OF WEAKNESS

"all one can say is that this power will be exercised wisely by some, foolishly by others, and that among those who bear arms, some will be loyal and others rebellions
                                                                                   Sun Tzu: Art of War.

The looming insecurity caused by boko haram took a different turn with the bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria on August the 26th 2011. This time around the message intended was not only to insult and embarrass an already ailing and struggling Government but to further remind all and anyone who cares to even try to understand the political undertone of this violent group. Who given the opportunity haven't failed in a constant show off just how easily they can orchestrate and penetrate even the seemingly safest or irrelevant constituencies.
48 hours after the blast at the United Nations building in Abuja, nothing but condolences, speeches, bomb site/hospital visits and pointing of fingers to the wind with no concrete evidence charting a way forward and no evident crackdown on these blood thirsty inhumane sect.
In but a little while this camouflaged military-styled civilian coup de etat will surely dictate where and who is safe if this style of arrogance is allowed to take the route of an unchecked menace that time will cure.
Goodluck transcends finding a headway from the ill-luck or unfortunate events of others. With the number of challenges facing the arm of Government burdened with the cross of a Nation as blessed as Nigeria is, let not the deception of humility or a blind eye to the events that matter bring about "for want of a nail, the shoe was lost"
Issues as boko haram demand swift and expedient action from a confident head who knows and is able to identify when at war.

SILVERBIRD MBGN 2011

"she's the range i'm the rover"

Its been weeks of crazy hype and awareness as the weekend of beautiful ladies drew closer. Finally, today Saturday the 25th of June, Silverbird entertainment set out once again on a mission to produce the most beautiful girl in Nigeria.
The long drama of disappointment started quite early this time around, as the red carpet interviews was short of any standard, there's little point in trying to rate the performance.
Also, the overwhelming presence of eastern girls who represented almost all the states is surely not an equal reflection of the beauty that abounds in our tribal diversity.
The questionable list of judges, did little to impress generally, the fairness and sincerity of coming up with the best choice.
Susan Peters  - Nollywood actress
Bankole Animashaun  - Classic Beverages
George Ubong - Panic Alert Security
Karen - Eko Hotels n Suites
Princewill Tonye - River Drill Group
Nike Adegoke - Lufthansa
Rita Harati, and finally
Silverbirds own Vice President Guy Murray Bruce.
Kudos for the night go to Lynx for his stage performance (simply exhilarating)
Face of choco, Wande Coal for appearing on stage (no energy during his performance)
Dr Sid, also for appearing on stage and some other artists who i'll rather not mention.
To really hit the international standard for events as this, extra effort has to be put in place.
Thanks Silverbird for doing your best, it could have been a better show but then, next year"s another opportunity to do better.

Deserved or undeserved, really dont matter now
Congratulations Slyvia Nduka/Miss Taraba, our MBGN 2011 and Miss World Representative.

THE BOKO HARAM VIRUS

"guns, oil and drugs in Nigeria is Goverment bussiness"

What began through unchecked sectarian violence has graduated into a full blown virus gradually eating through the very fabrics that hold the nation together. Though since its official formation as a group in 2004, nothing completely extreme was heard from the group until 2009 when the boko haram sect took responsibility for series of violent clashes in Bauchi which led to the death of an unconfirmed number of people.
More recently the boldness of the sect has extended to suicide bombing as the Police Headquarters in Abuja can testify to.
As always, more questions have been generated by these acts of violence than answers have been provided. Boko haram, an ideology as opposed to western education??? in this 21st century???.
If at any point in time that indeed was the ideology of this sect, it surely has changed with the use of sophisticated weapons, website publications and a gradually more modern approach to executing acts of violence. Which brings us to the question of what is boko haram?, and what do they hope to achieve from all this?.
Firstly a look at some facts -
The boko haram has no known organizational structure.
The goals and objectives of the boko haram have never been fully outlined by the sect.
The boko haram sect has taken responsibility for a number of repeated bombing around the country most recently.
A good number of the boko haram members are recruited insurgents from neighboring chad.

The bombing that took place at the Police Headquarters only further expose the rot and decay which has continued to plague the security outfits as other arms and sectors of the Goverment and individual citizens are not left out of the ripple effect.
With an operational budget of about 216billion Naira, the sophistication of the Nigerian police fell game to the under-sophistication of such a group as boko haram. Its easy to point fingers and lay blames on what should and could have been done, but with the deed being done, a way out is the next best step. With a thousand and one options of fishing out these culprits who have chosen not to respect the sacrosanct gift of life, its amazing that nothing has been done so far other than give speeches and condolences to families of the dead.
Its about time faith be restored  the hearts of tax paying, God fearing and peace loving citizens of this country. If indeed this next four years will be full of goodluck or all about Gods justice and blessings, time alone will tell.

DIMEJI BANKOLE ARRESTED

"nothing ever is the way it seems"

The arrest of the former speaker of the house of representatives Mr Dimeji Bankole is but drop of water in the ocean of corruption in high places. Its interesting to note that Mr Femi Babafemi, the EFCC spokesman said "an intelligence report showed that the former speaker was planning to leave Abuja for Lagos on Sunday evening and thereafter flee the country through an illegal route" ( how come the EFCC intelligence gathering has not been able to come up with more?). Considering the duration of time the EFCC has had to investigate allegations of corruption against the former speaker (over a year now) it is sad that at the time of his arrest, nothing tangible has been mentioned outside the obvious which the general public hasn't read about in the papers.
The word investigation has its word history
from Latin investigatio "a searching into", from investigatus, the past participle of investigare, itself from in- "in(to)" + vestigare "to track, trace"
Modern dictionary defines investigate as -n to carry out a detailed examination or inquiry, especially officially, in order to find out about something or somebody. Encarta®
or to observe into in detail. to examine systematically.

Following this definitions, its easy to see that the EFCC has done nothing but waste tangible time, and hard earned resources and come up with nothing, for this the commission too should be investigated. Crime is crime right from the inception of the thought process even before the main act or further more, days, weeks and months after such crime has been committed.
The EFCC should make use of their resources and run investigations in a manner worth the training the commission spends money training its personnel. With detailed evidence gathered during the period of such investigation the only missing link will be the culprit. Once the pieces are put together, denial would be scientifically impossible.

Its also sad to note how efficient the EFCC seem to be when it comes to intelligence gathering about money matters as compared to other security outfits who half the time come out scratching their heads in absolute wonder when hideous crimes are committed even within their jurisdiction

As for Mr Bankole if found guilty, not to worry. He should take solace from the experience of the "Lagos boy"

THE OGUN STATE WAY

"when a lie runs thousands of miles for years, it takes only a moment of truth to catch  up"

On Friday the 27th of may 2011 which also marked the last working day of Otunba Gbenga Daniel as the Governor of Ogun state, a brief handing over ceremony was held as he presented his hand over notes and  also rendered his account of service after serving as the state Governor for 8yrs. Several hours later at about 11pm Otunba Gbenga Daniel was on a British Airways flight en-route the UK for  holidays, barely 36hrs to the Presidential/Governorship inauguration ceremony.
An excuse for his sudden trip was information that Gbenga Daniel had 3weeks earlier informed security agencies within the state of his intentions to travel. Aside that Gbenga Daniel also mentioned the absence of former Governor Segun Osoba back in 2003 during his own swearing in ceremony.
If this wasn't questionable enough, unconfirmed reports of various cheques issued by  Gbenga Daniel to individual appointees bounced back at designated bank branches.
In addition to speculations of Gbenga Daniels misappropriation of funds during his tenure, also were reports that the EFCC already was on the heels of the erstwhile Governor based on ongoing investigations.
Well for a start, the Ogun State House of Assembly which has been closed to a majority since the 6th of September 2010 held a plenary session on the 1st of June 2011. In a bid to show displeasure at the way things have been run, recently revoked decisions made by the former Governor Gbenga Daniel.
The OGD Plaza named after the Governor has been renamed OPIC Towers.
The Gateway Hotels Concession of 520 Million Naira for 25yrs also revoked
All appointments and promotions within the last three months revokrd.
The refund of all monies spent by minority lawmakers between the period 6th september 2010 till date.
The inclusion of Gbenga Daniel and 8 House of Assembly members in the Ogun House of Assembly Black Book (OHABB).
Approved the renaming of Gateway Stadium to Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium, among others.
Its easy to see that an amicable resolve in the political crises in Ogun state is far from feasible, as the drama continues to unfold in series its only the big fish episode thats bound to be star studded.

MAY 29TH (A GSMLESS INAUGURATION)

"a challenge becomes a problem when the solution bearer incubates the challenge"

The much anticipated day arrived. Aside the live media coverage of the inauguration event, all forms of mobile communication was completely shut down. GSM mobile operators had earlier received a directive from the office of the Federal Government to shut down their services within the Federal Capital Territory in a bid to reduce to the barest minimum mobile communication between suspected terrorists who capitalize on the medium also for communication. Good enough it indeed became a temporary solution running a long term problem as it simply turned out a save face measure to a national embarrassment. Though shortly outlived of its already served purpose of security immediately GSM service providers reactivated their networks. The loud bang was unmistakable as the peace of fun lovers at a beer parlor in the Zuba area, a satellite town of the Federal Capital Territory was violently disrupted, leaving two persons dead and a dozen more injured.  Zaria town of Kaduna state and Maiduguri also experienced bomb attacks post the inauguration ceremony  leaving an unconfirmed no of injured victims and about 20 dead .

The Zuba bombing immediately took the shine off the inauguration, as the bad news became the publicity choice of international media who were quick in gathering facts and figures. This of cause still echoed the failure of the Federal Government irrespective of what so ever mediocre security machinery which never extends to guaranty the safety of the ordinary citizen. At the senate plenary session held today May the 31st 2011, a motion was raised as to the best method of approach to tackle the strings of bomb blasts being experienced as their perpetrators have continued to remain elusive to security operatives as they operate unperturbed. Going by all said at the session, the light at the end of this dark tunnel indeed is afar off.
As we usher in the beginning of a new political dawn with tripple bomb blasts across the country, its more of a prayer than hope that a lasting solution to the impending danger lurking ahead will be a medicine before death.

PRESIDENTIAL STONES

"The people of Africa, the people of Uganda, are entitled to a democratic government."

On the 26th of January 1986, Yoweri Museveni, made the statement above as he was sworn in as Ugandan President following a topple of the former government led by Tito Okello. 25 years later, the dream of democracy is still a desert mirage which has increasingly remained but dashed hopes in the heart of many. Its no different for the opposition Dr Kizza Besigye who was treated to a dish of pepper spray and beating by the police on the 28th of April 2011, during a  walk to work protest over the high prices of fuel and food in the country. This wasn't the first time he'd be arrested and beaten by the police since the February 18th 2011 elections held in Uganda.
A careful look at the political history of Uganda clearly shows a lack of discipline by their leaders who believe that the country is a personal item, or to be run as a family business with them at the head of affairs making all the decisions. A government which proposes a constitutional amendment so that protesters will be jailed for at least 6 months after arrest instead of being released the same day.
With such knowledge in place it was with shock that our own President Goodluck Jonathan graced the swearing in ceremony of such a man as Yoweri Museveni, little wonder his convoy was stoned at as the people of Uganda had to express their disappointment. As the most populous African nation on the Continent  the pride of being a Nigerian goes way beyond the name. A lot is being expected of Nigeria as we gradually have scored a place in the international community. It would have cost our President nothing to express his dissatisfaction with what's going on in Uganda by simply refusing  to attend, or sending a delegate to represent him. His presence there only endorsed the wrong and made it look like he was comfortable with the present situation in Uganda. If we pay so much for political advisors to the presidency, then such wrong moves as these simply shows where some of the wastage of public funds go to.

POST ELECTION VIOLENCE & THE WAY FORWARD

"the audacity of violence comes with the intensity of the crime"

With the April elections having come and gone, what should have passed as a smooth, free, fair and credible elections was marred by violent protests in several part of the country. Within days thousands of people were displaced in Kaduna, Bauchi and Kano. Reports of isolated cases in states like Niger, Zamfara and Gombe. The victory of Goodluck Jonathan, over Muhammad Buhari, didn't go down well with most of the northern supporters who used the opportunity to unleash untold violence on unsuspecting citizens.  The ugly face of illiteracy once again raised its face as footages shown, clearly indicates the use of street thugs and urchins who have no understanding whatsoever the effects of their actions or why they are even being used to perpetrate such mayhem.
Ever since the April elections concluded, the perpetrators of the post election violence can be said to have gone scott free, as nothing has been done in way of investigations as to the roots of the problems. Not left out, the house of the CPC vice presidential candidate Pastor Tunde Bakare was also gutted by fire under mysterious and yet to be disclosed circumstances. Also the long list of NYSC Corp members who lost their lives and those who were maimed from several attacks during the post election violence.
Some of these actions go a long way in inciting unseen and uncalculated conflict as the hurt and anger felt by those who lost loved ones to the violence can only be appeased when justice is done.
Though four years to come, its about time the constitution makes provision for situations as these as regards to post election violence. Even more, with the knowledge of how this evil is being carried out as experienced once again in the April elections, a new strategy and measures that'll curtail and put in complete check the activities of those who sponsor and participate in such violence should be on the front burner as solutions are being proffered as to forestall a future occurrence.

SULEJA BOMB BLAST

"guns, drugs and oil in any country is government business"

Its the eve to the NASS elections scheduled to hold tomorrow nationwide, though according to Professor Jega voting wouldn't hold in some places due to logistic constraints. As preparations are in full gear with the deployment of security agents, INEC officials, observers from different groups local and international, the rude awakening of a bomb blast shook Suleja town in Niger state with an initial unconfirmed report of 20 dead and several others wounded. This isnt the first time a bomb will go off since the electioneering and campaigns began. On Thursday the 3rd of March 2011, a scheduled PDP rally was abruptly brought to an end with a bomb blast that instantly killed 10 people at the time of the blast. Today the strike was at the INEC office Suleja, Niger state at between 5pm and 5.30pm. The explosion occurred barely 2 hours after electoral materials had arrived the office and the place was a beehive of activity. Youth Corps members, INEC officials, party agents and security operatives were among the crowd of people present at the time of the blast.

Todays blast goes on its way the path of history as one of those sad moments were lives have been sacrificed in the name of elections. Its really unfortunate the events of today and what that stands to portray as Nigerians go to the polls tomorrow.
Every-time an opportunity arises for confidence to be restored in the minds of the general populace by security operatives and the government,  its usually a failed effort. Sadly more blood is drawn to the weary distraught of all, leaving a people battered by the rain of abuse as their umbrella of faith has been torn by those (a cabal) with a severed conscience.

Known for his apologies and sorries, an address by Professor Jega slated for sometime tonight will do little to console the families of the dead, will do little to remove the already instilled fear in the citizens (which is the whole idea ) more over had elections held last week? who knows. So now is not the time for speeches and apologies, but its a time for decisive and positive actions actions.

POSTPONED NASS ELECTIONS

"a tortoise found on its back, needs help"

The shifting of the NASS elections till Saturday the 9th of April 2011, was largely anticipated and welcomed by all. As expected, the hurried speech of Professor Jega has also been modified as the ballot system to give him ample time as to avoid further apologies and acceptance of blame. With a little effort Prof Jega could have avoided been once again looked upon as one not sure of how to get things done. Its amazing that despite his wealth of experience in various fields, this INEC job has proved quite a herculean task for him as his name and integrity is on the line. A good one week is more than the period the Professor requested for, so this time around lets hope he gets it right.

ELECTION DAY 1

"incompetence has as many faces as death itself"

After an assurance of the readiness of INEC, barely 24hrs prior to the first day of the National elections, its no longer news the afterthought of our Independent National Electoral Commission head Professor Attahiru Jega. One stops to wonder as to how an event such as the National Assembly (NASS) elections scheduled and planned so meticulously should suddenly be postponed due to logistic challenges. The soberness and acceptance of responsibility with which our Professor made this declaration is no excuse, as this simply points to the fact the unpreparedness of INEC to conduct a free and fair elections.
The request by INEC for the postponement of the NASS elections till monday the 4th of April 2011 is no doubt unacceptable. If months of preparation can still result in such disappointment, is 48hrs enough? or will Professor Jega need more time?
The first ripple effect of this move is the loss of one working day, as Monday the 4th of April will no doubt be an undeserved public holiday due to the lack of adequate calculation by INEC.
The  remobilization of  party faithfuls by politicians will incur more costs and unnecessary confusion as the dissemination of information in a country struck with the paralysis of inadequate power, will definitely be left in the hands of third party reports by individuals.
After all the supposed movement of materials across the country, the safety of these material between today and the 4th  of april also comes into question.
The icing on the cake is the total shutdown of all activities within the country as a preparation for the elections, which now amounts to a waste of time and a colossal loss in terms of economic activities.

The postponement of this election clearly shows the unpreparedness of INEC and also a national embarrassment to the Nigerian populace as the whole world had eyes on Nigeria. With so much money being requested by INEC its a little difficult to see what "logistic challenges" the money Jega received couldn't solve to save us this National drama
Once again the suspicion of the incompetencies of INEC have been placed on the front burner by this postponement. To expect a little technical hitches here and there is no problem as the percentage error of any planning is always expected, but not in the way  the first day of the election time table has been altered and messed up.
Nigerians deserve more than has been received today. Its time for Professor Jega to begin to fulfill his promises, step up his game and act the part of the Professor that he really is. Not just with the use of apologetic words, but in actions that truly speak more.

THE GRANDEE FINALE

"with the exclusion of truth, a lie thrives in solitude"

On Wednesday 30th march, the last and the least of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) collaboration with Nigerian Elections Debate group (NEDG) once again was broadcast. True the words of the ANPP ACN & CPC Presidential candidates who refused to attend, the obvious could not be denied. Speaking on broad areas already disclosed, the PDP presidential candidate Goodluck Jonathan had the whole field to himself and spoke as he dimmed fit. Though unchallenged, he had the time buzzing on every question, like he had so much to say and in the so much was found nothing but empty, worn out campaign cliche. He had ready answers to questions on the power sector, political appointments, corruption, the  freedom of information bill (FOI bill), agriculture, budget implementation and a whole other range of topics which turned the interview into a jolly good ride.
As the elections kick off on Saturday the 2nd of April 2011, the reality of the situation will gradually play out as we step into the very first 24 hours of the long awaited Nigerian General Elections 2011. Questions on security remain paramount as the issues of election violence.

THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

de·bate [di báyt]
talk or argue about something: to talk about something at length and in detail, especially as part of a formal exchange of opinion
Encarta®

"Learning is a continuous process and so no matter the age of man, he continues to learn everyday"

Today, three of the four invited Presidential candidates were present at the debate. Chief Mrs Ebiti Onoyom Ndoki of the UNDP, Prof. Patric Okediachi Utomi of the SMDP and Dr John Omoniyi Dara of the NTP. Though all speaking out of an interest of passion for our beloved counrty, the athmosphere was more of a question and answer interactive session.
A debate is an avenue for creating a mind change, a debate is speaking passionately as according pressing concerns. Its the ultimate avenue to showcase the relative competencies of the candidates in an intellectually engaging manner. A debate is a challenge, a debate is competitive, its fiery. A debate is pulling out the facts, throwing verbal molotov cocktails, a few tricks up the sleeve in a way thats acceptable by the rules of the game. A debate is not a jolly good ride
Today's Presidential debate was short in all measure of the signs of what a debate should be.

AN NTA AFFAIR

"change doesn't always have to be desired, its inevitable"

Time indeed is precious, as many who were in attendance for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in collaboration with the Nigerian Elections Debate Group (NEDG) organised Vice presidential debate found out. Nothing spectacular really, a well organised audience, a male and female judge, one
time-keeper and of cos the moderator. Getting down to business of the day candidates for the debate were introduced as
Hon Rasheed Shitta Bay of the Mega Progressive Peoples Party (MPPP)
Alhaji Lawal Kasim Funtua of the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP)
Alhaji Galadima Samari of the United Nations Party for Development (UNPD)
Eng. Gabriel Ogbonna of the National Transformation Party (NTP)

No sooner than the candidates were introduced, one could easily tell that this was not only going to be a waste of time, but also an unfair contest.
The candidates of the  MPPP and SDMP were not in attendance, no reasons given. The UNPD candidate came with an interpreter as his only spoken language is Hausa, and his standing opponent remained the NTP candidate who had his first and masters degree in the USA. Though that didn't make much of a difference, as the engineer in him seemed to have roughed up his smooth foreign edges.

When Jonathan said "if i can make it, you can make it" such words surely do apply to Alhaji Galadima Samari of the UNPD. Though constant in the spotlight for longer periods as he answered questions back to back, he still turned out a star at the event as he answered his questions with ease and a technical know how, a clear indication of what must have transpired before the debate.
If this is the so called debate with a wider reach and known stakeholders, then NTA and NEDG need to come up with more initiative for the other debates. As this first one is but a basket full of water.

The second half of the Vice Presidential debate produced only one man on the podium, Architect Namadi Sambo of the PDP. Not that its a thing of surprise, one couldn't have expected more. If the incumbent PDP candidates have become too proud to share a stage, i hope such pride would not be alloted the ballot boxes.

THE TINAPA SCAM

"only the medicine man knows where the white elephant lives"

After sinking in close to 56billion naira (have in mind 1000 Million = 1 Billion) the Tinapa project is no better than the con of fraudulent emails, except that it was orchestrated by a State Governor Mr Donald Duke, who got approval from the Federal Goverment.
The promises of wonderland Tinapa, is short of what it should be as an operational free trade zone. Aside its bogus structure, activities on the ground premises have been simplified to an ordinary events center. http://tinapa.com.ng/leisure/modules/news/.
According to the Managing Director Mr Bassey Ndem, Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort can generate the sum of 100 billion annualy, so what then is wrong with Tinapa?

A PRESIDENTIAL MIXTAPE

"it is by free will that man asks the will of God be done"

The politicking of campaigns is similar to the dressing up of a bride, facial and body make up, beautiful dresses, sweet perfume, veil covered face, flowers in her hair, necklaces and bangles, ankle chains and painted feet, only to exhibit the dark fruits of her inner mind soon as the vows are over. The absence of the PDP from the Vice Presidential and Presidential debates held on the platform of the NN24 TV network hosted on channel 414 of the DSTV cable network  didn't go down well with other participating candidates who felt it was a "bullshit' attitude which was uncalled for and unbecoming of the PDP. Despite the so many excuses given by the PDP candidates about their absence, an afterthought of their actions birth the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria in collaboration with the Newspaper Proprietors of Nigeria and other groups debate. To play it safe, eight political presidential aspirants have been invited even though only four out of the eight invited are known, namely the ANPP, (All Nigeria Peoples Party)  CPC, (Congress for Progressive Change) ACN, ( Action Congress of Nigeria) and PDP, (Peoples Democratic Party). The rest four out of the remaining 10 presidential candidates remain unknown. Although surely do not expect to see the types of Pat Utomi of the SDMP (Social Democratic Mega Party) or Chris Okotie of the FDP (Fresh Democratic Party) at the venue, as their presence there would be unfair since its not an english speaking contest with the man who wasn't born rich and had no shoes.

The infamous debate planned by the Broadcasting Organaisation of Nigeria in collaboration with the Newspaper proprietors of Nigeria and other groups is scheduled for Tuesday the 29th of March 2011. Interestingly the ANPP, CPC, and ACN  Presidential candidates who were present at the NN24 TV debates have snubbed the invitation extended them as they have unanimously refused to attend. Not to worry though, the bitter pill of karma can be swallowed with the honey of opportunity this creates, as it provides no competition for Goodluck (who is lucky once again) and allows him present a mixtape of already rehearsed responses as was declined him previously by the NN24 TV debate.

Hopefully, since the debate a meant to bring good-luck to the contestants, Goodluck should have no problems attending this one.

The excerpt below is taken from the reader comments on the online page of the 234Next.com on the issue of the decline by the ANPP, CPC and ACN candidates.
"i guess they want him to know that if Mr President prefers talking to D'banj rather than debating with them, then they are not ready to be seen as his kokolettes"
